The initial situation

The Obermain Therme in Bad Staffelstein is one of the most popular spas and leisure pools in Germany and has a total water surface area of around 3,000 m² spread over 25 pools and a natural bathing lake. In 2023, the Obermain Therme came second as the customer favorite in the Focus Money Awards in the area of leisure pools and spas. With large pools, saunas, sauna pools and small warm bathing pools, the thermal spa offers its visitors a wide range of bathing and relaxation options. A special highlight of the Obermain Therme are the saltwater pools with a salt content of up to 12%. Unlike many other spas that offer pools with brine water, Bad Staffelstein has its own spring. This is located on the Obermain, where the remains of a tropical primeval sea have been preserved. From a depth of 1,600 metres, the primeval sea bubbles up from the earth with a mineralization of 12% and a temperature of 52 °C. It is treated by the operators using a special process and distributed to the various pools. Thanks to this spring, the Obermain Therme can call itself the spa with the warmest and strongest thermal brine in Bavaria. Studies have shown that bathing in natural brine has an excellent effect against rheumatic complaints, cardiovascular diseases, blood pressure problems, degenerative bone and muscle diseases and psychosomatic complaints. The natural brine in particular, which is offered in various concentrations in most of the pools, has made the Obermain Therme a magnet for visitors in the region. In order to remain attractive for visitors in the future, the spa is continuously developing. Since its construction in 1986, the Obermain Therme has relied on pump technologies and solutions from SPECK, which were also used in this expansion.

The implementation

In addition to new sweat cabins in the indoor area of the Obermain Therme, three new pools were added to the outdoor sauna area: a 127 m² brine movement pool, a 70 m² pool bar, which is less inviting for swimming and more inviting for relaxing and sitting at the bar, and a natural bathing lake with 540 m² of water. The highlight of the conversion is the brine movement pool with 12% brine and a water temperature of 36 °C. The construction posed a particular challenge for the entire system technology. Not only the pools themselves, but also the treatment and pump technology had to withstand the extreme requirements of 12% brine. This required close cooperation with all suppliers, including SPECK. The brine places high demands on the material, which the installed pumps from SPECK can withstand without any problems. All components must be suitable for use with brine water in order to ensure smooth operation of the system. "Due to the different water temperatures and the different brine concentrations, each pool has its own treatment circuit," explains Artan Pojani, whose company Powatec was responsible for the construction of the new pools. The treatment circuit was designed in accordance with DIN 19643 and includes the process combination of flocculation, filtration and chlorination.

We have always only used pumps from SPECK. The high quality standards of the products and the competent service are decisive factors for us. We will continue to rely on SPECK as a reliable partner in the future.<<

The technology

Brine baths are still very much in vogue due to their high relaxation factor and positive effects on body and mind and are therefore offered by many spas. However, the brine concentration in most spas is usually only two to three percent. In the brine movement pool at the Obermain Therme, however, a brine concentration of 12 percent is used, which represents a considerable challenge for the pool and the treatment technology. Only certain suppliers can offer suitable solutions and components for these very demanding requirements. As in the other pools, the Obermain Therme relies on pump technology from SPECK in its brine pools. Pumps from the BADU Block and Normblock series in solid bronze and with thermoplastic corrosion protection coating (Binero series) and a waste water pump from the 21 series specially developed for the Obermain Therme are used. The pumps in bronze design and with thermoplastic anti-corrosion coating are brine-resistant, permanently prevent corrosion and maintain a consistently high level of efficiency over their entire service life. A large number of BADU pumps, sample water pumps and sample water recirculation systems in AK design are also used. In order to be energy-efficient, the majority of the pumps are equipped with frequency converters. A total of 183 pumps from SPECK are in use at the Obermain Therme. The range of applications extends from bathing water pre-treatment to the operation of the filter systems, attractions and graduation towers to sludge water treatment and disposal.
